The Cavemen’s Biography
The Cavemen is a Nigerian highlife band consisting of the brother-and-sister duo Kingsley Okorie, a bassist, and Benjamin James, a drummer. Born and raised in Lagos State, Nigeria, in the early 90s, the siblings hail from Orlu, Imo State, and began their careers as choristers.
Kingsley earned a law degree from Babcock University and the Nigerian Law School’s Kano campus, while Benjamin attended the Peter King College of Music in Badagry, Lagos.
Kingsley and Benjamin were exposed to high-life music by their driver, who always played songs by Oliver De Coque.
This sparked their passion for highlife music and their musical style, which is a mix of Afro-beats, jazz, soul, and highlife music.
They credit their mother, who preferred evangelical music, and their father, who preferred pop artists such as Michael Jackson and Westlife, for exposing them to various musical genres in their younger years.
The Caveman’s Career
The Cavemen were officially formed in March 2018 and were discovered by Lady Donli.
They stylized their band name with a dot (The Cavemen.) to avoid lawsuits from a New Zealand artist with the trademarked name.
They are known for their live performances and have collaborated with artists such as Cobhams Asuquo, M.I., Made Kuti, and more.
In 2020, they released their debut single, “Osondu,” and their debut album, “Roots,” which was recorded in their living room and produced by the duo.
They produced 11 songs on Lady Donli’s “Enjoy Your Life” album, and she was a co-executive producer on “Roots.” The Cavemen performed at the finale show of the fifth season of Big Brother Naija.
In October 2021, they released their sophomore album, “Love and Highlife,” which features guest appearances from Cobhams Asuquo, Made Kuti, PC Lapez, and Etuk Ubong. The album was praised for recreating highlife in an innovative way that retains its traditional essence.
